410 - MAKING THE INITIAL DIAGNOSIS OF CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE IN THE ADULT: ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY SPOT DIAGNOSIS

Early Career Involvement
Workshop Description: The number of adults with congenital heart disease continues to grow in Canada, and now far outnumbers pediatric cases. With the wide spread use of echocardiography, increasingly echocardiographers are encountering adult patients with congenital heart defects and may be the first to make the diagnosis. This workshop aims to build on foundational knowledge of congenial heart echocardiographic findings in the adult via a highly interactive format. This session will be 45 minutes long with 3 speakers each presenting a 7 minute long case that the audience will work through. These cases will focus on recognition of key imaging findings in adult congenital heart echocardiography, with audience participation.

Interactive and Engagement Activities Description: The audience will be asked to identify and interpret illustrative cases using the audience response system. After each session there will be 3 minutes for review of the audience responses to key questions. There will be 5 minutes at the end for open question and answer period

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this session participants will be able to:
  • list the key echocardiographic findings in common unrepaired congenital heart lesions;
  • describe the echocardiographic approach in the evaluation of cardiac shunts, and the role of multimodality imaging; and
  • outline the morphologic features used in the identification and characterization of the right ventricle in adults with congenital heart disease.
