Dr B-Khanh Lam is a cardiac surgeon at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Ottawa and Chair of the Cardiac Surgery Examination Committee of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He has recently served as Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education-Academic Affairs and Deputy Chief of the Division of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.
Dr. Lam received his doctorate in Medicine from McGill University in 1994. He completed his cardiac surgery residency at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. Dr. Lam pursued his clinical research training at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation as a Research Fellow of the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. He was an International Fellow at the Cleveland Clinic Heart Center where he completed his Master’s in Public Health and Epidemiology, with a special emphasis on advanced parametric outcomes analysis. He was also a Clinical Scholar of the Cleveland Clinic Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery and completed a surgical fellowship on complex coronary and valve surgeries, minimally invasive valve surgery techniques, aortic surgery and atrial fibrillation surgery.
Dr Lam’s clinical research interests include arrhythmia surgery outcomes, valve outcomes analysis, therapeutic options for the treatment of ischemic mitral regurgitation and atrial fibrillation surgery. He also has research experience in the field of simulation in surgical education and his current research focus is on cognitive technological integration methodology in surgical education. He has authored more than 180 research publications, presentations, and book chapters as well as 65 abstracts. Dr. Lam is a member of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, Canadian Cardiovascular Society, Canadian Society of Cardiac Surgeons, Cardiothoracic Surgery Network, Heart Rhythm Society and Association of American Medical Colleges.
