Dr. J. Patrick Neary is an exercise physiologist and Professor in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies at the University of Regina. He has developed an independent research program over the past 20 years to examine the pathophysiology of mild traumatic brain injury or sport-related concussion that was funded nationally by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), and provincially by the Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation (SHRF). His research in this area has confirmed that transient cerebrovascular (blood flow regulation) and cardiovascular (heart rate variability, blood pressure) disturbances occur following a concussion. His applied research related to cardiac function has been used to understand the effects of physical and mental stress in occupational fields such as firefighting, policing and shift work. Dr. Neary received an NSERC (Collaborative Research Development) grant from the Canadian Government to assist in the development of a cardiac biosensor for safety and security. This research led to the development of LLA Recordis™ cardiac sensor. Dr Neary is part of the long-term Post-traumatic Stress Disorder/Injury projects in the RCMP and Public Safety Personnel. He is currently funded by the National Football League (NFL)/NFL Players Association Joint Pain Management Committee to investigate the use of phytocannabinoids for pain management and neuroprotection in concussion. He is an active Board Member of the Saskatchewan Brain Injury Association.
