Medical Student
McGill University
My name is Maya Verma, and I am currently a first-year medical student at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. In 2023, I completed my undergraduate degree in the Arts and Sciences Honours program at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.
I’ve been interested in cardiology since my first year of undergraduate education. Throughout my degree, I had the privilege of being involved in research under the supervision of numerous wonderful physicians and mentors, who have contributed to my growing passion for the field.
Currently, I am working with Dr. Judy Luu at the Montreal University Health Center on a project aimed at improving the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease in women from racialized, marginalized, and rural communities, leveraging large amounts of biodata with an emphasis on cardiac MRI. This project allows me to merge my interests in cardiology with my interests in advocacy for vulnerable populations, specifically women and children.
As I’m further exposed to cardiology as a medical student, my passion for the field is only increasing. I can confidently see myself becoming a cardiologist in the future, whether it be for the pediatric or adult population. Both are extremely special and dear to my heart. I am very thankful to be welcomed as a presenter at the CCC in 2024, and to pursue my interest in cardiology.
