After training in Toronto, Philadelphia and Los Angeles, in 1983 Dr. Benson joined the clinical staff at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto as the Director of the Variety Club Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories, a post he held through 2019. In 2007, the laboratory facilities were redeveloped as the Mitchell Goldhar Cardiac Diagnostic and Interventional Unit. Dr. Benson developed the interventional program in cardiac catheterization at the Hospital for Sick Children, which today is one of the largest programs in North America. He became a full professor of Pediatrics (Cardiology) in 1992, is author of over 450 original articles, numerous book chapters and several textbooks and has an international presence in both pediatric and interventional cardiology. He received the Career Achievement Award at the 2001 PICS & AICS conference. In 2017, Dr. Benson was named Master Fellow of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (MSCAI). He was the 2023 recipient Helping Little Hearts Lifetime Service Award from the SCAI. In addition to his focus in interventional cardiology; a major interest is in the management of heart failure and cardiomyopathies in children.
