Dr. Nicholas Giacomantonio received his Doctor of Medicine at Memorial University in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Completed Internal Medicine and Cardiology at Dalhousie University in Halifax. He subsequently became a Level III Echocardiographer. Dr. Giacomantonio remains very active in the under and postgraduate programs with curriculum and course development; and has served as a member of the Cardiac Residency Training Program. He has received the Community of Scholars Award of Excellence in Medical Education for Dalhousie Faculty of Medicine and Young Alumnus of the Year for Dalhousie Faculty of Medicine. He was promoted to the rank of Full Professor in July 2014.
Dr. Giacomantonio is currently the Director of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation (CR) and the
Community Cardiovascular Hearts in Motion Program. Dr. Giacomantonio’s research interests include Cardiac Rehabilitation translational research throughout Nova Scotia. The data has been presented and published nationally and internationally and has led to permanent funding as a health care model under Capital Health. His biggest interest is toward provincial programing with CR ideologies expansion in a Hub and Spoke Model referred to as REDUCE-IT. He collaborates locally with Dalhousie University experts in Behavior and Frailty as it applies to Cardiovascular Medicine Dr Giacomantonio also has long standing interest and activity in “virtual” management of CR continuance and initiation to move away from the traditional “bricks and mortar” approach to risk management.
Dr. Giacomantonio has previously completed 3 terms on the board of directors for the National Association for Cardiac Prevention and Rehabilitation (CACPR) and recently completed 2 terms as a member of the CCS National Guidelines Committee. He is presently working with CACPR members to produce new management guidelines.
