Dr. Aneal Khan is a Pediatrician and Medical Geneticist with more than 20 years of experience in diagnosing and treating rare genetic diseases. Dr. Khan works in a multi-disciplinary team at M.A.G.I.C. Clinic (Metabolics and Genetics in Canada). Dr. Khan trained at the University of Toronto, Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Rush Medical College in Chicago, and the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. He worked at the Hospital for Sick Children and University Health Network initially, McMaster Children’s Hospital, then at the Alberta Children’s Hospital and left in 2021 as Professor of Pediatrics and Medical Genetics. He founded M.A.G.I.C. Clinic which opened it’s doors to patients in April 2021 with a goal to improve access to finding a diagnosis and improve the number of treatments available for people with rare metabolic and genetic diseases.
Dr. Khan performed the first gene therapy in the world for Fabry disease and for Gaucher disease, Liver Cell Transplant for Urea Cycle Diseases, the first community-based gene therapy unit in Canada at M.A.G.I.C. Clinic. In 2021, the molecular genetics laboratory that Dr. Khan co-founded, called Discovery DNA, received accreditation from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) to make available rapid and clinically accredited whole exome and whole exome sequencing so that patients can access rapid gene sequencing.
Dr. Khan works on boards with the Canadian MPS Society, Canadian Fabry Association, Canadian Association of Pompe, Mito-Canada, International Collaborative Group on Gaucher Disease (ICGG), Pompe Registry, has worked on a number of governmental committees, is a member of the International Advisory Group (IAG) for the National Strategy for Drugs for Rare Diseases through the Government of Canada, and is an I am Number 12 Changemaker. He values a number of collaborations with organizations such as Alberta Health Services, local, national and international colleagues.
