Dr Gary Small completed his undergraduate medical training at the University of Wales, College of Medicine, Cardiff and graduated with the Physicians in Wales Prize. Following his internal medicine training, Dr Small was awarded a MRC clinical fellowship at Edinburgh University, UK and studied his PhD in post infarct angiogenesis. He completed his cardiology residency training in Scotland at Aberdeen University where he was appointed as a Clinical Lecturer in Cardiology. Here he furthered his post doctorate studies in angiogenesis, enjoyed clinical investigator success in cardiac pacing and echocardiography research and completed his training in interventional cardiology. Dr Small attended the Ottawa Heart Institute from 2010-12 as an imaging fellow. Here he was awarded a post graduate scholarship and won the Polk Research Award in 2011. He was subsequently appointed as an Interventional Cardiologist at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine in Thunder Bay, Ontario and led the undergraduate and post graduate cardiology education programmes. He returned in 2017 to the Ottawa Heart Institute and Ottawa Hospitals to pursue Cardiac imaging research with a particular focus on cardiac oncology and cardiac amyloid.
