Dr. Luc Mertens is Section Head of Echocardiography and Co-Director of the Pulmonary Hypertension Program at The Hospital for Sick Children. With the University of Toronto, he has been appointed Professor of Paediatrics and is a Senior Associate Scientist for the Research Institute at SickKids.
Dr. Luc Mertens graduated with a medical degree from the University of Leuven, Belgium and acquired a doctoral degree in Medical Sciences. He went on to complete specialized training in Paediatrics and Paediatric Cardiology at the University Hospitals Leuven and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, USA. From 1998 – 2008, Dr. Mertens worked as a consultant paediatric cardiologist for the University Hospitals Leuven and combined with innovative research, was recognized as a European leader in the field of paediatric echocardiography. This then led him to join SickKids in 2008, supporting the Division of Cardiology.
His interests lie in the cardiac function of children with congenital and acquired heart diseases. His research focuses on developing novel non-invasive imaging techniques and prospering its translation into clinical applications to assess ventricular and vascular function in children.
