Dr. Demers obtained his doctorate in medicine from the Université de Montréal in 1995. He then completed the cardiac surgery residency program at the Université de Montréal in 2001. During his residency, he also completed a Master's degree in biomedical sciences. Subsequently, Dr. Demers was awarded scholarships for a two-year fellowship at Stanford University under the supervision of Dr. D. Craig Miller. During this period, he developed an interest and expertise in the management and monitoring of aortic diseases (aneurysms, dissections, aortic bicuspidism, Marfan syndrome), especially valve preserving aortic root reconstruction surgery, aortic dissection surgery, valve repair surgery, and endovascular treatment of aortic diseases.
He has authored & co-authored more than 140 peer-reviewed scientific journal articles, more than 50 scientific abstracts and 12 book chapters.
Dr Demers has been appointed Chief of Department of Surgery of the Montreal Heart Institute in 2021. He is a staff surgeon at Hôpital du Sacré-Cœur de Montréal and a professor in the Department of Surgery of the University of Montreal. He has extensive experience in complex valve and aortic procedures and his current practice focuses on aortic surgery, aortic and mitral valve repairs and valve reoperations.
