Dr. Marc Ruel received his MD and his Royal College Certification in Cardiac Surgery from the University of Ottawa. He pursued a scholarship in minimally invasive surgery and laboratory research at Harvard University, where he also obtained a Master’s of Public Health. He is a Professor in the Departments of Surgery and of Cellular and Molecular Medicine at uOttawa.
Dr. Ruel pioneered multiarterial minimally invasive coronary artery bypass surgery worldwide, as well as other cardiac surgical techniques. His career is dedicated to making heart surgery less invasive and leading to better patient outcomes. He is currently the Endowed Chair of Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery at the UOHI.
Dr. Ruel’s 11-year extended tenure as Head in Ottawa led to massive growth in surgical volumes and national outreach (including a new partnership with the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador), quality, research and innovation, advanced education, international reputation, recruitment, and overall impact.
Dr. Ruel has published 500 scientific papers and chapters, including 6 books, and delivered 350 invited lectures, mostly internationally. He leads key international trials in cardiac surgery (including ODIN and MIST) and is a recipient of numerous awards. The laboratory research program founded by Dr. Ruel at the start of his career has achieved translational impact.
He is the immediate Past-President of the CCS. During Dr. Ruel's term, the CCS received its first-ever federal funding, embarked on new public advocacy initiatives in COVID, myocarditis, and heart failure, and launched the Canadian Alliance of Cardiovascular Centres.
Dr. Ruel reviews for leading international funding organizations. He is the Surgery Editor for Circulation, Canadian Director for the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and North American Director for the International Society of Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery. He chairs the Steering Committee of the UK-based, international Arterial RevascularizaTion trial, cardiac surgery’s longest running large randomized controlled trial.
