Dr. Ashok Kakadekar has dedicated over 30 years to pediatric cardiology, significantly enhancing services in Saskatchewan from 1994 to 2017 and in British Columbia since 2018. A fellow of the American College of Cardiology since 1995, he focuses on developing pediatric cardiac services in the Fraser Health region. He directs the non-invasive pediatric echocardiography lab at BC Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Kakadekar completed his training in Pediatrics and Cardiology in the UK and at UBC before joining the University of Saskatchewan as an Assistant Professor. Recognized for his teaching excellence, he has mentored numerous students, many of whom became staff physicians. During his time in Saskatchewan, he established the province’s first pediatric echocardiography services, trained sonographers, and expanded fetal echocardiography clinics in Saskatoon and Regina. As Division Head, he was instrumental in developing pediatric cardiac transplant services and played a crucial role in planning the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital.
A key figure in founding the Western Canadian Children’s Heart Network (WCCHN), Dr. Kakadekar’s work significantly reduced mortality rates for children with congenital heart defects across Western Canada. He co-founded the Children’s Healthy-Heart and Activity Monitoring Program in Saskatchewan (CHAMPS), promoting health for children with heart disease, and has published extensively, including 54 abstracts and 27 peer-reviewed articles.
Since relocating to UBC in 2018, Dr. Kakadekar has focused on expanding pediatric cardiology services in the Fraser Health Authority and supporting fetal cardiology at BC Women’s Hospital, contributing to over 750 fetal echocardiograms annually. As a co-investigator in the FAST trial, he continues advancing pediatric cardiology, with his commitment to teaching and research consistently recognized by peers and trainees.
