Dr. Joel Bierer's journey in cardiac health care began in 2010 at the University of Western Ontario, where he attained his Bachelor of Medical Science degree four years later. This achievement was followed by matriculation to the University of Western Ontario's medical school in 2014. Dr. Bierer was fortunate to have foundational experiences with Canadian cardiac and thoracic surgeons, which firmly focused his professional pursuits toward the cardiac surgery specialty. Accordingly, Dr. Bierer enrolled in the rigorous cardiac surgery residency program at Dalhousie University in 2018, where he currently trains. Simultaneously, he is pursuing his academic ambitions at Dalhousie University, engaging in the Medical Research Graduate Program and the Clinician Investigator Program. Dr. Bierer's Ph.D. thesis delves into cardiopulmonary bypass-associated inflammation and immunomodulatory therapies to enhance recovery after pediatric cardiac surgery. Dr. Bierer is deeply committed to his training in excellent clinical care and innovative research, aiming to elevate health care for people with heart disease.
